I admit I’m biased: I’ve stayed at The Merlin Guesthouse since 1988 and have stayed there almost exclusively since 1992. (The other times were Key Lime Inn and Lighthouse Court, also HKWI properties.) Just so you know where I’m coming from, I don’t stay at an inn because it has satin sheets or HBO in the room. I’m not there to hang out at the hotel. I want a comfortable bed and pleasant amenities. If you want 5-star, white glove service, Key West, for all is casual appeal, has plenty of those choices. At the Merlin you will find pleasant, rustic, comfortable B&B-style accommodation and charm. More important, a staff who remembers you and is universally approachable and friendly. You’ll leave feeling like part of the family, and indeed you will be. (If you’re a cat person, be sure to say hi to Jordan. He lives on the property, and he’s part of the family too.) There are a wide variety of rooms, from small and simple (the porch rooms, for example) to some truly lovely suites. The pool has thoughtful touches: baskets with paperbacks and sunscreen, and in the afternoon, iced tea is set out in the breakfast area. Now for the negatives, just so you know this isn’t a total sell job (and hey, family members can critique each other honestly, right?): 1) If you’re a light sleeper, avoid the front porch rooms. Mopeds on Simonton buzz by at all hours. There are identical or similar rooms on the back porch. But, if you plan on stumbling home drunk (and why not, it’s Key West) and wild horses couldn’t roust you, no worries on the front porch side!) 2) Some people criticize the pool, and I certainly remember when it was bigger. It’s not exactly a lap pool; it’s more of a very large hot tub (there is a water jet timer) but again, in this place and setting, maybe you can eschew your inner Michael Phelps/Summer Sanders for a bit and just chill in the bubbles or the still, serene water. 3) The mattress in Room 22 is not up to the usual HKWI standard. It’s slightly caved in the middle and slants to one side. However if there are any other imperfections here, I can’t think of any, and I’ve been looking for 20 years, several times a year. (I live 200 miles north. Don’t hate.). I hope this is helpful to you. Cheers.

What more can I say!  I was a little concerned that because it was just myself and my 17 year old daughter traveling we might feel a little awkward because it seemed like a couples place.  Not so at all, it’s an anybody who’s there to have a great time kind of place!  Lovely rooms, lovely garden, lovely pool, and lovely breakfast’s in the garden!  The staff in the office will go out of their way to make sure you stay is comfortable and pleasant!  We plan to return as soon as we can!

Great family-friendly property. Located a block from upper Duval Street, it was a perfect location for me to bring my mother-in-law for the first time with my 11 year old son. Upon arrival, the staff at the Merlin Guesthouse provided everything we needed and they were always quick to help or provide a service whenever we asked.  We stayed Unit 21, the two-bedroom/1 bath cottage. It has a fully equipped kitchen with a full-size fridge, stove and microwave. The one bathroom was functional, but it would have been ideal to have an additional 1/2 bath in the unit. Things to know when selecting this unit; 1) Simonton St. can be noisy at times, so the bedroom closest to the street will hear the cars and the trash truck in the morning, 2) This is historical location, so it does have a historic, vintage look/feel and things may not work perfectly, but if it doesn’t, the staff is right there to repair everything ASAP, 3) This unit has one of the only parking spots “on-property”, which is great with the limited parking in the area, 4) The local cat, Jordan, is very sweet. We knew he was there and we brought some cat treats from home to share with him (don’t tell his parents!). He stopped by every morning for his daily treat. 5) Did I mention that the staff is awesome? If not, let me say it again. They are AWESOME! I would highly recommend this property to any family looking to stay in the middle of it all, with local friends in a comfortable, home-like environment. Thanks to all at the Merlin Guesthouse and I look forward to coming back with my husband the next time!

I stayed in the king suite and it was worth it! I really enjoyed the scenery and waking up in the morning and eating breakfast with my boyfriend on the front porch. It was very nice and private. The room felt cozy and warm. We didn’t move our car once! Everything is walking distance which was great And convenient.

We stayed at Merlin Guesthouse on May 2014. We loved the location; right in the middle of the island and a block from Duval street.  The staff was super friendly and the breakfast was delicious! !!!!

Merlin Guesthouse was a lovely place to stay. My room was spotlessly clean and beautifully laid out. The check in staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast on the shaded tree-covered deck was delicious. The guesthouse is very well located and once my business meetings were completed, I enjoyed wandering about town and visiting the Audubon and Hemingway Houses.

I’d recommend staying at Merlin to all my friends.

Thanks. Clare

We stayed 3 nights at the Merlin Guesthouse.  Check in/out was a breeze and all info was accurate.  The grounds were beautiful.  The staff was courteous and helpful.  The blueberry muffins on the continental breakfast were very good.  If we had it to do again, we would choose a king room, as the queen room was kind of small.  The location was great; one block off Duval and just blocks from everything on the island.  We rented a scooter from A&M Rentals which was a very convenient 2 blocks away and that is definitely the best way to get around on the island.  All in all, we had a great stay in Key West.

We loved staying at the Merlin Guesthouse for our honeymoon.  Our king room was beautiful and the staff was very helpful.  The small breakfast in the morning was a great way to start our day!  If we venture back to Key West, we will definitely be staying at this location!

Last year, I stayed at the Lighthouse Court and enjoyed my stay, yet I must admit that as a single older man, the Merlin Guesthouse ranks considerably higher in my estimation. The reason is simple: an older clientele because of having only a spa pool.

The staff was outstanding and quite cordial. Linda always had a smile whether greeting or spending time sharing island information. Kenneth went out of his way to help around the outdoor seating and breakfast area. Yariel (not sure if I’m spelling her name correctly) from housekeeping seemed to never stop working except to initiate a greeting.

Room #4 was quite comfortable although the shower was a little difficult to manage due to its size. While I do not need a handicap-accessible room, I often encourage inns, hotels, etc. to install hand-held shower sprayers. The morning breakfast was quite nice to have, and it allowed me to engage in conversations with other guests.

My only other suggestion would be to investigate a place for a bike rack near the front entrance. I had an adult trike from Eaton Bikes (excellent people to deal with) and locked it by Room #15 on the rack. With any vehicle parked by the Petronia St. gate, it was very challenging to ingress and egress.

Overall, my stay was great. The Merlin Guesthouse fit my needs perfectly, and the staff was sensational. Thank you for having quality and affordable accommodations. Whenever I return to Key West, the Merlin Guesthouse will be my first choice!

This was my third year in a row staying at the Merlin Guesthouse.  Over the past three years I have seen an upgrade to the property. From the Keurig machines, so I can enjoy my coffee from home, to the great breakfast and ice tea to sit and enjoy in the afternoon. Cleaning staff also does a phenomenal job as well.

The staff is very personable, I enjoy talking with Kenneth and Linda each.  They accommodate all my requests when i make my reservation.  ( I request room 12 and they are able to accommodate it every year so far)  Very friendly atmosphere and I can also not forget my friend Jordan who comes to greet me every time I come.

I look forward to returning to the property in 2015 unless I am able to get back sooner!
