We just stayed at the Merlin from 12/21 through 12/29 (2014). My husband and I are both a “young 62” and we have lots of vacations in our lives. I lived in Key West as a young teen (2 years) but only returned to vacation 10 years ago. This was our 3rd trip. We will RETURN to the Merlin. We arrived after 10 our 1st nite and immediately a lovely and friendly woman came to greet us and give us our key/show us the basics and welcome us! Sorry but can’t recall her name but she made some nice suggestions about where to get a late nite bite.
Next morning we met Kenneth and he was awesome. Everyday when we sat out on the patio for the perfect breakfast (you had just the right combination of not too heavy choices—LOVED that!) he was right there with suggestions, answering our many questions and being a wonderful hands-on manager. He got us hooked up right away with great bike rentals. We compared prices later as we passed various bike-rental stands and he definitely got us a great deal! We do not drive a car while there and we zoomed all over the island (usually wearing bathing suits or shorts as the weather was phenomenal)—going to FANTASTIC restaurants (Louie’s Backyard on C.Eve was a blast!!! Mini monsoon made for a dramatic rush off the lower tiers inside but Louie’s had it all together and accommodated everybody immediately/smoothly into the festive foyer/living area with cozy tables/settings. We were lucky enough to be farthest out on the awning-covered area where clear-plastic protective shades were undrawn as we sat with our dinner and watched the amazing lightening show!!! Pouring rain suddenly stopped just as we were about to leave bikes and call a cab. We pedaled back to Merlin just in the nick of time—4 minutes later the downpour revived. It was great!)
We LOVED our room (the one with the big patio facing the pool)—everything was clean, comfortable and quiet! My husband was inspired to buy us a new bed after returning from K.W. because he realized that he could be sleeping better after resting so well at the Merlin.
We were lucky enough to catch the local Christmas House Tour, see all the lighted houses from our bikes and checked out some new activities (to us) such as the ECO CENTER, the oldest house in Key West and the Women’s Club House (is that what it is called?). Repeated some of our favs (Butterfly Sanctuary, Dante’s bar/pool/mojitos/cracked conch, El Sibonay) and loved going back for the 2nd time (this trip)to Santiago Bodega. Fun spot!
The staff at the Merlin were ALL so nice, professional and did great jobs! The cleaning ladies were so cute and helpful if we needed extra towels or whatnot. We just LOVED the location of the Merlin Guesthouse and were super excited to be introduced to “Off the Hook” (just kitty-corner) where we had lunch one day and dinner another—everything was EXCELLENT!
So I am working on trying to plan going back to Key West for next Christmas but hoping to stay at least a week longer….! Thanks for helping to make this my FAVORITE VACATION & Christmas ever!!! SINCERELY and I REALLY MEAN THAT!!!–NancyBy: Nancy Reed-Marzolf on January 12, 2015
