27th Annual Schooner Wharf Minimal Regatta
Calling All Boat Builders and Would-Be Ship Wrights
(Rob O’Neal/Florida Keys Bureau)
The 27th Annual Schooner Wharf Minimal Regatta has become a Memorial Day weekend tradition in the Florida Keys. This past weekend, the event was postponed due to heavy rain and winds, and will take place this Sunday, June 3rd. Sunday’s weather is forecast to be just right for a great day of hi-jinks and hilarity with minimal materials and maximum creativity.
Vessel Registration starts at 11:00 a.m. followed by Vessel Inspection at 12:15 p.m. and the first heat will start soon after at 1:00 p.m. Adding to the festivities will be live music and great Schooner Wharf Galley fare!
Rules require each team to build a boat our of a 4×8 foot sheet of plywood, two 8-foot-long two-by-fours, a roll of duct tape, a pound of fasteners and epoxy paint.
The homemade vessels’ minimal construction with minimal materials and maximum ingenuity leads to marginal seaworthiness, but loads of laughter and entertainment for hundreds of spectators cheering on their favorites!
There are two categories of “Minimal Vessels” — Kayak/Canoe Design & Open Design. Competitors will win prizes in each design group for Fastest – 1st & 2nd Place. Other prizes are awarded for the Most Creative Designs – 1st & 2nd Place, Best Paint Jobs, Best Costumed Entries, Sportsmanship Awards, and Sinker Awards (Schooner Wharf Bar, 2018).
Come early to get an up-close look at all of the creative vessels. See you on Sunday, June 3rd! We’re looking forward to a fun, wet and wacky Minimal Regatta!
