We checked in the Chelsea House Hotel on a Monday in mid-October at around 5pm. We had had several conversations with them via both email and telephone before arriving. We were especially worried about Hurricane Matthew and its effects on Key West and our vacation. Each contact we had with Chelsea House seemed to further cement my feelings that we had chosen a great place to stay for our vacation. We had also had concerns about being near the pool as we didn’t want a lot of noise; they chose room #10 for us which is on the ground floor right around the corner from the pool and a straight shot to the parking area where I would park my motorcycle and our rental scooter. For other motorcycle riders just a note, the parking area is compressed gravel, or more like pebbles. I really don’t like gravel when on the bike, but this proved to be a non-issue during our stay for two reasons, first it’s very compressed so you don’t really slide and at parking lot speeds, it won’t bother you, second, we didn’t move the bike after check in until the day we left. It’s much easier in Key West to get around on a scooter than a big Harley, and I highly recommend Sunshine Scooter Rental.
The check-in was pleasant and easy; we had been riding on the motorcycle for about 8 hours and we were very tired but hungry. I told the check-in clerk the I wanted fresh, fried seafood for dinner and she recommended a place for us that turned out to be great!
Our room was very nice; queen bed (which was very comfortable, slightly firm) with nice linens, and bedside tables and lamps on both sides, nice sized flat screen TV, a comfortable chair, a dresser, and a large walk in closet (with a security safe on the back wall for your valuables). Be advised, most of the rooms at Chelsea House (I was told) do not have closets, so we felt lucky! The bathroom was simple and elegant. A shower only with very good water pressure and plenty of nice linens. The whole room was spotless and well decorated and the most important amenity, quiet! We found a Demi-bottle of Prosecco on ice with two champagne flutes waiting for us in our room, which I thought was very nice. My wife had told them we were visiting Key West for our wedding anniversary, they must have noted this and left the Prosecco for us to celebrate.
The first morning, I went to the pool for breakfast. I think the host at the pool was “Shirley,” she greeted me warmly and directed me to the coffee that was strong, dark, and hot; a great way to start the day in Key West! They also had cereal, muffins, bagels, yogurt, bananas, apples, and juice. By the way, the breakfast does not start at the crack of dawn, so if you need coffee early, they have a Keurig in the office, which I used once as well. Before we headed out for our first day’s adventure in Key West and a visit to the Butterfly Conservatory (which I highly recommend), I mentioned to the Front Desk Clerk the my wife’s back was bothering her from several days riding the motorcycle. I asked for a couple extra pillows (there were already four). That evening, we found in our room that they had accommodated my request and I really appreciated that.
I used the pool itself on one occasion to cool off and it was very refreshing. The temperature was perfect and it wasn’t crowded or loud. They supply towels at the pool so no need to bring one from your room and there were plenty of chairs, tables, and also chaise lounges for sunbathing and covered areas as well for relaxing out of the sun.
On one evening, my Wife and I relaxed on the small porch outside our room door. The patio furniture was clean and comfortable. I enjoyed a Cuban cigar while my wife had a drink. It was very pleasant.
On our final night in Key West, we opted for a more luxurious dinner, something a little different than usual Key West fare. We went to the La Trattoria Restaurant which was absolutely wonderful! While they still allow the laid-back casual attire Key West is known for, the food and service were anything but casual. It was amazing and I could eat the escargot every night of the week!
If I were to make any suggestions to the management at Chelsea House, it would simply be this; I would invest in luggage stands and store them under the beds in each room and leave a note in the room that they can found under the bed. Many people simply don’t want to unpack and others don’t want to leave their luggage open on the floor. A minor suggestion, and I am sure I am not the first to mention it.
Check-out was equal to check-in, painless and quick. Our room was well worth it for Key West and a bargain at the Chelsea House Hotel considering all the amenities, comfort, and superior service from the staff. We thoroughly enjoyed the Chelsea House Hotel, and would visit again. All of the host staff made us felt welcomed and I truly believe each genuinely wanted us to enjoy our stay there and were willing to help us if needed.By: Timothy Allen on October 17, 2016
