I was searching for hotels online for a one night stay in Key West for the weekend when I happened to come across the Merlin Guest House. Being that I usually stay at well known, bigger hotels, I was skeptical about staying at a more smaller, privately owned guest house. After reading many reviews online about the Merlin, I went ahead and booked an economy queen guest room for my girl friend and I to stay in for the weekend. Upon arriving at the guest house, the streets were PACKED with cars, which isn’t unusual for a Key West weekend.
Fortunately for us, the Merlin Guest House has a private parking lot in the rear of their property for Merlin guests to park in, with a fee of $10.00 per night, which is totally worth not having to park and walk to your car 10 blocks down to find a spot (but beware – if you have a truck you will probably have a VERY hard time getting in and out of the parking lot and back onto the street, it is SMALL ). After parking in the private parking area, we than went to check in, which was a very easy process and the staff were all friendly and helpful. We were given a key to our room. Knowing that this was an economy queen room we weren’t expecting much, the name says it all. BUT, although it was small, it was perfect for what we were looking for. The beds were clean, floor was the original, historic dark wood and creaked a little bit, and the bathroom was small but accommodated us very well. Instead of using cheap shampoo, condition, and soap like most hotels, they give you quality organic supplies and you don’t feel dry when coming out of the shower. The walk from the hotel to Duval street is perfect, it will literally take you 1 minute from the time you lock your door to the time you hit the corner of Duval, which is one of the very main reasons I chose this hotel was because of the distance and how close it was to everything you could imagine, scooter rentals, shopping, bars, and a delicious desert restaurant that everyone should try called Better Than Sex.
The hotel staff did make us aware that there was a breakfast in the morning near the pool, however after being out on Duval all night I woke up to late for that.
I would recommend this hotel and the economy queen guest room to anyone looking to stay in Key West right on Duval that is travelling with two or less people.By: John Bettineschi on July 23, 2016
